Duties and Responsibilities

The Police Dispatcher is responsible for the operational and administrative control of the Dispatch Desk. As a member of CNS, and due to the nature of this assignment, it is imperative that the incumbent maintain a high standard of performance, professionalism, including dress and deportment, impartiality, discretion and customer focus.

Duties include but are not limited to:

bullet

Call answering and recording requests for service/complaints from the public

bullet

Dispatching Police and/or Fire by means of radio and paging systems

bullet

Operating computer systems such as PROS (Police  Recording Occurrence System), CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre), JEINS (Justice Enterprise Information Network System) and In-House systems using WordPerfect and E-Mail

bullet

Monitoring a Central Alarm Station for Burglar and Fire Alarms, dispatching essential services and advising stakeholders as required

bullet

Any other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

The incumbent must possess the following experience, skills and attributes:

bullet

Excellent computer skills with an ability to type, minimally 30 wpm (words per minute)

bullet

Experience dealing with a variety of people

bullet

Previous multi-tasking experience

bullet

Demonstrated dependability, discretion coupled with a very strong attention to detail

bullet

Strong oral and written communication skills to respond to and record service requests

bullet

Well developed listening skills

bullet

Previous experience operating a two way radio system

bullet

Some knowledge of the Town of Truro boundaries and Police procedures would be an asset
